I commented on the blogs of Mica, Josh, Ryan, and Eric.
Mica and Josh both had amazing thoughts/articles about how to protect and restore our environment. Our world right now is dying because of our lack of concern for the environment. Many people/places still don't even recycle, which any intelligent person realizes is necessary by age 7. What is the point of having the worlds greatest ipod if your world isn't going to last long enough to use it (not that ipods aren't amazing)? We are also in desperate need of an alternate energy source. We are running out of fossil fuels, and the broken bonds are a one time use for the most part. Nuclear fusion and solar energy are the future. If we are able to switch out of oil, political and economic pressure and dependency will be greatly diminished. Solar energy is amazing because the sun just keep pumping it out with no damaging affect on our environment. The only problem is that it lacks adaptability (i.e. it does not do well with car engines). Maybe we have to stop trying to adapt the energy to us and just bite the bullet and adapt to the energy? Nuclear fusion could go either way. It is safe and clean, and we have more the enough hydrogen to make it work.
Ryan posted about altering the DNA of bacteria to benefit humans. Fantastic idea, but equally intimidating because of what could happen if something went wrong (kind of like certain areas of cloning). Once people figure it out, the information will be as easy to get to as wikipedia. So unfortunately it could lead to bio bombs flying overhead in world war III. Biological warfare is scary, but anyone who wants to truly advance with evil intentions isn't gonig to wait for a university to do it for them. On a positive note I think it would be great if we could alter bacteria so that they will atttack certain viruses. The major flaw in that idea is how our own immune systems will adapt. It may turn into fighting off bacteria in addition to a virus.
Lastly Eric posted about ice cream! Ice cream is the best and any improvement on something so sweet and simple is a welcome one. Antifreeze hopefully won't have any side effects. The antifreeze could also be used for many other purposes like protecting planes from ice (people have probably done this already but I have never heard of it).
